POETRY IN THE VALLEY AND BEYOND
Lucy Brock-Broido at Smith

Lucie Brock-Broido’s work evokes a world that is gorgeous and ethereal and dark. Stanley Kunitz praised her “brilliant nervosity and taste for the fantastic.” A disciple of Emily Dickinson and Wallace Stevens, she has been called “deeply forbidding, revealing.” Her fifth and most recent book, Stay, Illusion, was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
This event will be preceded by a Q&A session in the Poetry Center in Wright Hall at 4pm the same day.
Rowan Ricardo Phillips

Rowan Ricardo Phillips is the author of Heaven (forthcoming) and The Ground: Poems, for which he received multiple honors, including the 2013 PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award. His poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Granta, and many other publications. Poet Eric McHenry observes that “the ground Phillips treads is a middle ground—between spirit and flesh, heaven and earth, here and gone.” And Teju Cole, in The New York Times Book Review,called Phillips “the future of American poetry.” He is associate professor of English at Stony Brook University, where he directs the Poetry Center.
Paradise Found Walking Tour and Reading/Reception

A book launch for Paradise Found, A Walking and Biking Tour of Northampton Through Poetry and Art will take place on Sat, Sept 20th. The celebration will commence with a poetry walk beginning at the Lyman Plant House at 2 pm and concluding with a reception/reading/book signing at the R Michelson Galleries at 4 pm. The poetry walk will follow the route mapped out in the book and participating poets will recite their poem at each corresponding location along the way. The public is cordially invited to join us in this unique celebration of the poetic and artistic tradition of our community!

Amherst Poetry Festival!

Downtown Amherst, Emily Dickinson Museum, Sweester Park
Back for a second year, the 2014 Amherst Poetry Festival runs from Friday, September 19, through Sunday, September 21, at locations throughout downtown Amherst. Featuring over 100 poets over the course of the three days, the festival celebrates western Massachusetts’ incredible literary community and the mix of historic and contemporary writers who make the region so unique. All events are free!
The main festival stage will be on the lawn of Emily Dickinson’s house, the Homestead, and will run from 10 a.m. to roughly 9 p.m. Poets scheduled to read include James Tate, Dara Wier, Martín Espada, Dan Chelotti, Lenelle Moise, John Hennessy, Rich Michelson, James Heflin, Mark Hart, Corwin Ericson, Karen Skolfield, Ellen Dore Watson, Lori Desrosiers, Emily Pettit and many more.

WMUA is ably run by students, and the Programmer, who has the unenviable job of arranging a continuous, live, on-air series of shows, 24 hours a day, is hard-pressed to get coverage when the UMass students are on vacation. (DJs are usually about half students and half community members). Hence the change in schedule.
